Rebellion against a petite don't: maxi dress

Many petite women are wary of the maxi dress - the sheer amount of material can appear overwhelming to a small frame. However, with the right style, maxi dresses can actually flatter petites and give a lengthening effect. See?

I kid. Here is my take on the maxi dress "fashion faux pas." It's rather hard for a petite to find a decent-looking maxi dress that doesn't require a tedious hemming job. The result: tiny fit syndrome as coined by Jean from extrapetite.com where small women are so excited at finding clothes that are tiny enough to fit them that they ignore all other logical fashion laws. So when I saw this shorter maxi dress, I was quick to buy it even though there were areas I didn't like about the dress. For one, I'm not so fond of halter tops...especially when the strap is very bulky. Secondly, as a girl who seems to have skipped over puberty without harvesting the blessing of a fuller chest, I do not need the hole there. Most of all, I could only picture myself wearing this on a tropical vacation trip given the juxtaposition of the revealing top half with the full cover bottom half. And so it sat in my closet for about three years.

I was experimenting with my wardrobe one night when I came up with this way of wearing the dress:

Instead of the dreaded halter look, I took the extra long straps and crossed them for a cross-back style. Of course I was too lazy to measure and sew the straps in position, so I took a giant safety pin, positioned the straps across the front of my body and secured them together under the front of my dress. Voila!

I wore this dress layered under an over-sized, cropped tee for comfort and modesty (: I love how the beading automatically gives an illusion of a statement necklace when layered under the shirt. A cropped tee is appropriate for layering over long dresses because it gives an illusion of a longer body. I love the floral cut out on the bottom of this shirt. The top is still available at H&M as of 9/21/11 in the sales racks! I purchased it for only $10 near the beginning of summer.

I adore these teardrop turquoise earrings from Forever21. Perfect sizing, perfect shape, perfect color to spruce up any outfit.

I shall end with some silly pictures.

My BF thought that I looked like a pilgrim haha. Ideally I would wear a top that's a little bit more fitted to avoid looking like said pilgrim and reveal a more feminine figure. But alas I had no other cropped top that was more fitted. What do boys know anyway? It's called "bohemian" (;
